It just goes to show ya….there’s always something new to learn. I have been a graphic designer utilizing the computer for design since 1984, an online Internet semi-guru (since 1999), yet discover daily, widely known and simple tools that are amazingly powerful. I am sure my recent “discovery” will elicit a “duh” from many; however, I know I will be joined by several comrades who will find this discovery as wondrous and intriguing as I did. So step aside Newton, here come the Gravatars!
What is a Gravatar?
No, it isn’t a tall, blue, animated creature on the big screen. Well, not entirely. An avatar is a “Globally Recognized Avatar” — your image that appears next to your name when you post or comment on a blog or website– essentially, a powerful means of identification.
Why Use a Gravatar?
Recognition. Granted, it may be a little self-serving and even ego-centric, but a gravatar will help promote and sell you and your product. It is, in a small way, branding your name. A product associated with a brand name is deemed a “leader” of the pack: Kellogg, Nike, Coca-Cola are all highly recognizable brands. While you may or may not run with these big boys, you can see how your name is key to your own, personal book promotion. Can you feel the power behind this simple icon?
How to Set Up a Gravatar
So how do you get your own gravatar? There are a plethora of online source from which to create gravatars, including your own desktop. But to utilize this “wondrous” image-branding tool, simply go to Gravatar.com and sign up. Once you choose a photo, you can modify your profile including interests and bio.
Stuck in PG land
Rox and I set the rating for Unruly Guides at “G” – for everyone. Yet, I was confounded as to why my gravatar was set to only display for PG and above. It definately is not an explicit photo. Luckily, there was an easy solution:
- Sign into your Gravatar Account.
- Choose “Manage Gravatars” from the drop down.
- Look at the your gravatars at the bottom of the page. Next to them there is a large “red” X and above that, your rating. To change the rating:
- Click the rating and select the correct rating you want.
- You are done.
I know, “duh”.
