Introduction to Social Media…
Facebook and Twitter are household names synonymous with social networking and yet many writers continue to resist. Perhaps it is due to time constraints. No matter the reason, writers must embrace the social medias. They offer free resources and have proven to increase visibility and exposure – something every writer needs to achieve.
TIP: Start slowly when entering the social media arena. Write down the reasons for doing your online networking, and then make a one-month plan to achieve these goals. Use just one social media first—Twitter is the least complicated.
All you need is a Twitter name. Of course you will want followers as well.
TIP: Link your blog to your twitter account using easy to install plug-ins. Every time you update your blog, a tweet is automatically posted on your Twitter page.
Followers
Don’t follow everyone and DO NOT use special software to obtain massive numbers of followers at one time. As a newbie, it is important you work yourself through the nuances of the site, learning how it works.
Once you feel comfortable with Twitter, branch out to other medias. Facebook would be the second choice.

Keep your “author/writer” Facebook account separate from your personal account by creating a pages or a separate account.

Building the Platform
Build Connections

Don’t just talk about yourself or your book. Engage and Interact with your audience – share insights, helpful tips or ask open-ended questions to get a discussion going.
Keep it Professional
Do not waste time playing games or taking tests. Time is precious, so be purposeful in every post.
Expand and Automate
Once you are regularly using Facebook and Twitter, expand to include Linkedin, Newsvine and other social networks. Connect all your accounts to each other to drive traffic and make your postings a lot easier.
