Before I recorded this podcast, I spent a good hour just talking with Deborah. What an intelligent woman. She is not only extremely knowledgeable in her field, but extremely passionate.
What is amazing is her story to publication. “Cold in California” is her first published novel, and not one she had thought she would ever write. She wasn’t into vampires, and said she would never write one. Fate, it seems, had other ideas.
One day, she noticed a strange incident involving a suspicious character entering a broken down, apparently abandoned warehouse. Fortunately for us, Deb’s imagination took over. As the story processed through her mind, the premise of the novel flashed into clarity: “What happens to a vampire after he dies? Really and finally dies? Aside from the stake-in-the-heart, crumbling-of-flaky-burned-flesh, what really happens?”
From this, a new type of vampire novel was born.

Cold in California: The Twice Baked Vampire Series
Unlike any other vampire book you will read, “Cold in California” playfully skirts the blood-sucking frenzies, and “proposes that even the worst of the supernatural world gets one more chance to earn heaven or hell.” Our ‘protagonist’ is Gabriel Strickland, who rudely discovers the meaning of a “Twice Baked Vampire.”
Gabriel Strickland is whisked from the bizarre accident that caused his final demise to a “holding tank of sorts located in West Hollywood. He learns that he and several other deceased supernatural creatures must await a final judgment for their souls. A society has formed within that helps them all function outside the walls of the holding tank. Eighty creatures, including other awaiting dead vampires, pixies, a legendary Navaho stick man and bothersome leprechauns, struggle together to earn brownie points (against their natures) and wait out what could be centuries of purgatory.”
Vampires aren’t the only beings you are introduced to. There are trolls, pixies, werewolves and even health-concious shapeshifters. It’s a warehouse fill of characters and Deb does an excellent job fleshing out each and “endearing them to the reader.”
Along with tongue-in-cheek humor, “Cold in California” puts a new and original twist on the term vampire. I highly recommend this novel — It is one I can truly say DOES NOT Suck!
