I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Spencer Brokaw, Author of The Impenetrable Spy.
I met Spencer when he sent me his novel through my Unruly Guides free book review submission form. Granted, I don’t guarantee that I will read every submission; in fact, it just isn’t possible. I base my decision on reading the synopsis included with the submission. Spencer had the most unique hook I had ever read. It began, “I am 12-years old…”
That was all it took.
Spencer began writing when he was very young… well, younger. His first story was called Agent J, and was about 12 pages long. He had so much fun writing it, and said he even got a “little goofy.” But then, like all temperamental artists, he took a year break. When he came back he decided he wanted to finish the novel…and he did, at the ripe age of 12.
The response has been phenominal, and it has spurred Spencer to continue writing. Since this podcast, he has finished the Sequel novel, and is currently working on the third and final book to the series, which he hopes to release jointly with the second.
About Spencer
Spencer is 12 years old, but you wouldn’t know that from his writing or even talking to him. He maintains a blog, SpencerBrokaw.com, and actively markets on twitter. But he assures me he hasn’t traded life with video games for the computer– he has an active outside life, where he swims and loves to play golf with his grandfather.
Spencer is a normal 12-year-old boy — who just happens to have a talent and tenacity for writing. It is a great honor to have met him, and I look forward to following his career over the next 10 years and beyond.

AUTHOR NOTE: As with Spencer, I warn that the Internet is not completely safe for children (or adults, for that matter). After receiving Spencer’s submission, I immediately involved his parents in the email correspondence. This is something that I am adamant about, and I also advised him to NEVER divulge where he lived, even to me.
Be careful with the information you share. Obtain a separate email for your personal and public life. Use a pen-name if you want to hide your identity online. I would hate to hear something bad happening to a child who’s only desire is to write.

Spencer’s interview was very interesting.
I am a CPA and author and have written a book series called Micro Business for Teens. Writing and self publishing is such a great micro business for teenagers.
I’m going to contact Spencer and ask to feature him on my blog. I think he’ll be an inspiration to other teenage writers.

I have had the honor to meet Spencer Brokaw and I love his book and can’t wait for the second one to come out. This young man has a vivid imagination and considerable drive. He’s knocking out thrillers and taking the rest of us indie authors to school.
This is what every kid should be doing. And you crusty cynics out there, don’t be messing with our guy Spencer, cause we know where you live.

Haha, thanks!
