Christian Author, Diana Prusik
Diana has worked for a florist shop for over 30 years and much of her insights for the book are drawn from her experiences. Life in a florist shop means you are privy to things you may not want to know – deaths, loves, apologies.
Diana has always loved to write, and still has her first “novella” she wrote at the age of 10. But it wasn’t until the last few years that she has followed up on her dream.
The biggest lesson Diana learned is that there is help for new writers. When she started her novel, she didn’t have an awareness of a writing world or organizations such as The American Christian Fiction Writers or The Christian Writers Guild.
Like many new writers starting out, she “felt like an island” and she felt alone. Unfortunately, new writers plug on alone, “re-inventing” the wheel, when organization like these are there to help. Having this support system makes writing much more enjoyable and successful.
In her debut novel, Delivery, she bases her novel in a florist shop in the small town of Mount Helicon. It opens with Livi and her co-workers preparing flowers for the funeral of a friend, Bink.
Livi is a floral designer in her family’s florist shop, and she is privy to some of the communities’ deepest secrets. And eventually the guilt and grief of past tragedies haunt her and instead of turning to real sources of hope she seeks refuge in alcohol.
The Wilson Gang delivers Much More than Flowers
My favorite character is Mom Robinson; I loved her after the first few pages. what makes it so much more enjoyable is knowing Mom Robinson is based on a real person from Diana’s hometown. Diana talks warmly about “Granny Lowery” – about her quiet, generous spirit and unconditional love; you can hear in Diana’s voice how much this one woman touch her (and many other) hearts.
Yet Mom Robinson is not immune to heartache, and Livi being in the florist shop, knows this. So even though she is struggling, she sees Mom Robinson chooses to be a willing vessel rather than retreating into a shell of hardness and anger.
The book touches on some difficult themes, yet retains a lightness that includes laughter and humor. I highly recommend this book, and have tissues at the ready – it will touch your heart.
