In the September/October 2010 issue of AARP Magazine, an article entitled “Find Your Inner Genius” showed how older Americans were “immersing themselves in new pursuits”. The article revealed how these late-blooming artists tapped into their creative talent, though working at varied and diverse jobs. It is this discovery that leads to finding your special niche.
You do not need to wait until you are eligible for social security to develop your hidden genius. Developing a unique product could just be an improvement of an existing product. Take, for example, the tennis shoe–definitely a non-unique concept. Yet, note the progression from the 50’s style sneaker to the shoe of today. A profitable niche is not the regurgitation of old information but how to present it with your own personal observations and uniqueness. Focus on your existing knowledge and skills to mold and create a distinctive one-of-a-kind product.
Creating an e-publication is no different from finding a business niche. While some may choose the path of repurposing or repackaging old content into a PDF, ePub or Kindle format, this avenue has a limited lifespan. And honestly shows your lack of devotion and talent. Good product ideas never arrive ready-to-use out of the box. They are painfully developed, researched and skillfully molded into an entity that is highly sought after.
So how does one find their “inner genius”? First look to something about which you are passionate. What do you ‘love’ to do? Or, what have you always wanted to do, but never found the time? Just remember, if you are willing to devote the time, research and effort into producing a quality piece your odds of success and fulfillment improve greatly.
Over the next several posts, I’ll lay out simple guides in finding your niche (complete with assignments). This is by no means a complete course to business building. It is, however, a good primer in helping you to “Find Your Inner Genius”.

- How do I turn my existing skills and knowledge into a successful product?
- Are my attitude and personality suited for this venture?
- How can I start a business I love to do that will improve the quality of my life?
