Dixon Rice, Author of “Montana is Burning” and “The Assassin’s Club”, offers advice and insights to other authors as well as the person — Dixon Rice. Born on Kwajalein Atoll, in the Marshall Islands, Dixon has been in Army intelligence, an investigator, funeral director and salesman. His passion of writing started with publishing the bedtime stories he told his children and he offers great advice for all writers by relating his own struggles and experiences.
Dixon Rice is a wonderful writer and new friend. Our talk was so easy and natural, it was like we had been friends all our lives. Dixon commented on Facebook that our interview was like “sitting on a pickle barrel in the store” and simply talking with friends — and I agree.

I want to profusely thank Dixon for joining me for an interview on such short notice — but you would never have known. Dixon is extremely at ease with people and his passion and love of writing shows. The more we talked the more great insights and advice he shared. Of course, we share a common connection. I recently moved from Kalispell, Montana for the Oregon coast and he (as well as my partner Roxanne) still reside there. It truly is “as small world”.
Dixon offers great advice to writers including his helpful three:
- Join, or start, a critique group
- Go to Literary Conferences
- And join Toastmasters
A critique group helps you see what you can’t. When your are “so close to the project”, a member of the group may see something you don’t – and you’ll be hitting your forehead saying “why didn’t I think of that?” The group is also encouraging. Help is offered freely without the sense that if you help someone get published, then you won’t.
Writer Conferences also help you meet with other writers as well as make important connections with literary agents, editors or publishers. And the insights and help they provide will help you improve your work.
Lastly, Dixon recommends joining Toastmasters. Someday, when you are published, you will need to go and promote your book — radio shows, book signings, and “podcasts”. Toastmasters helps you become at ease with an audience and teaches you how to improve your public speaking.
Besides the “Helpful Three”, Dixon provides a wealth of information as well as a personal look into Dixon the man. My only regret is I could not put the entire podcast in — however, our extra ramblings will not permanently end up on the cutting room floor. They will be resurrected in a Special Podcast I am currently creating that will include a plethora of “guests”. It was so much fun meeting and talking with Dixon and I plan to have Dixon back, perhaps to discuss his WIP novel “The Assassin’s Club”.

Dixon Rice Novelist says
I’ve been interviewed a few times before in connection with various local activities and tomfoolery, but never with such a friendly and gracious interviewer. Suzanne put me at ease immediately and keep the conversation flowing, yet I didn’t once feel I was being “pumped.” The reproduction quality and editing were excellent. I think the Unruly Gals and this website will enjoy quite a well-deserved success.
Roxanne McHenry says
Dixon, what a pleasure to meet you in person and chat over lunch at the Flathead River Writer’s Conference (it is a small world like Suzanne said). I love the quality of your voice in this interview and the excellent information. You’re welcome back anytime!

Nancy Duci Denofio says
Dixon and Suzanne – what a wonderful pair – I could listen to your interview over and over. I knew Dixon even before he knew me, when I first was asked to join Writers etc., and we became friends. Everything he stated on your interview concerning characters, where, when, how, and carrying a notebook, etc. is so true. I sincerely, enjoyed the interview, and hopefully others will hear Dixon’s voice as I have. Good luck in everything you do, your a dear person. Sincerely, Nancy Duci Denofio
