An Afternoon Chat with Kathy Kinney and Special Guest, Storylady Mrs. P
It’s holiday time and what could be better than meeting friends for coffee and conversation. Today, I am delighted to provide a relaxed conversation with American actress, Kathy Kinney — more notably known as Mimi Bobeck, the outrageously made-up, vindictive nemesis on The Drew Carey sitcom show.
Born in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, she spent many days reading “as many books as she could carry.” Books took Kinney on adventures to wondrous places, feeding her second love — travel. Coming from an Irish-American family, Kinney has acted in both television and in several movies including Scrooged, Stanley and Iris, and This Boy’s Life.

In our podcast Kinney describes how a search for the symptoms of hot feet gave a search result of “crone”. Dissatisfied and revolted by this comparison to “dead flesh”, Kinney, with long-time friend Cindy Ratzlaff, co-authored “Queen of Your Own Life: The Grown-Up Woman’s Guide to Claiming Happiness and Getting the Life You Deserve”. In this wonderful book, they share their “seven gifts” to give to yourself and blast the social tall-tale “young is beautiful and old is just old”.
Because of Kinney’s natural storyteller talent, and her love of travel, people and, of course, reading Mrs. P was created – providing a wonderful way to integrate the worlds of Internet books and reading to create a fun and entertaining way for children to learn. This new adventure was the world of video storytelling, where an eccentric, redheaded storylady (Mrs. P ) entertains children and adults with whimsical tales from her Irish childhood coupled with a classic children story — all from the comfort of her “Magic Library”.
I found Kathy Kinney to be a warm and genuine person, one whom I now am pleased to call a friend. My only regret is she kept her “humor in check”. So next time, Kathy– Bring it On!”
Special Guest Mrs. P
I was delighted that Mrs. P stopped by for a visit, even with her very busy schedule. She and a few of Santa’s elves are busy boxing up her first interactive storybook, which uses Internet technology in a new way to help kids learn to read. Mrs. P’s Four Favorite Fairy Tales and Funny Stories allows children to follow along in the book as Mrs. P reads the classical tales from her warm and cozy “Magic Library”.
“I’m very proud of Mrs. P’s new book because of its unique ability to help young readers improve their skills,” said Kinney. “Children and parents can open the book and read along with me at my website. We even have a Magic Dictionary at MrsP.com, so if kids comes across a word they don’t know, they can just pause the video and easily find out what it means.”
Mrs. P’s Four Favorite Fairy Tales and Funny Stories is available at Amazon.com and other booksellers across the country including a special aisle at Powells.com just for Mrs.P. For more information, visit MrsP.com and then come sit by the fire and read along as this little Irish lady brings her favorite classical tales to life.
